About the Artist: In the 1940s and 1950s, Dr. A. Jean Ayres, working as an occupational therapist with neurologically disabled children and adults, began to realize that their weak muscles and poorly coordinated hands and legs were not always their most severe handicaps. Their having trouble using simple tools or assembling simple puzzles suggested a visual perception disorder to Dr. Ayres, who undertook to determine what was not working well in the brain and to search for a solution to the problem. Her approach differed from that of other professionals. She believed that the best answers would be found in a better understanding of how the brain processes sensations - from not only the eyes and ears but other parts of the body as well. This she labeled sensory integration. Dr. Ayres earned advanced degrees from the University of Southern California and did post-doctoral work at the Brain Research Institute at the University of California, Los Angeles. She was on the faculty at USC for over 30 years. She is the author of the first introductory guide for parents, Sensory Integration and the Child, as well as scores of other books, scholarly papers, and lectures.
